Pinhole Self Portraits

The pinhole self portrait series was shot on a camera that consisted of a standard medium format back and a homemade pinhole lens. I took these photographs at a time in my life when I was struggling with a very mysterious and unsettling medical diagnosis. I felt like I did not recognize myself and I wanted to portray that photographically. I decided to drastically distort my appearance entirely through the use of long exposures of one to five minutes in length and the distortion of the pinhole lens. Often I would move around during the exposures – passing in and out of the frame – while bringing in various props. None of the visual distortion was achieved digitally, it is all made possible through time, light, and movement.
